Is there a point in walking?

Text and drawing by Frits Ahlefeldt

We’re ending up right where we started so what is the point, really?

Two hikers walking, one say what is the point in walking all this way if we end up where we started. Illustration by Frits Ahlefeldt
Trails can be a great metaphor for life

Walking in silence for a while I was searching for a good answer to my daughter. It can seem like spending a lot of energy for nothing.

Most people going to work do the same, end up where they started out from in the morning. And every year we end up at the same first of January date, we started out from.

The ancient often say that reality moves in circles, like nature, and the planet, the seasons and even life.

Maybe walking just make it a little bit more obvious. Or maybe a little bit more clear… Stories are said to be a metaphor for life.

Maybe trails are a metaphor for life too?… I wasn’t sure, maybe walking is just a great excuse to get out and do something together.

“Good question” I said, “yes, what is the point?”

My daughter was not impressed with my answer.
