Research of stairs along trails

Text and concept sketch by Frits Ahlefeldt. Hiking.org

When trails starts to rise or fall, at a certain angle stairs are one way of making the trails continue when the terrain gets steeper. ( meandering is another) Stairs can be made in many ways, when-ever possible it is considered best to use local materials and traditions. It creates better odds for easy maintenance and a style that fits the local place.

Here are a few examples of stairway design along hiking trails

Illustration is part of my research into ways to design, build and maintain hiking trails around the world.
