Crossing wetlands along turnpikes

Text and concept sketch by Frits Ahlefeldt. Hiking.org

Turnpikes are among the most common solutions when hiking trails are crossing over wetlands and soft soil. There are both benefits and challenges of turnpikes. They can last a long time, but can also change and stop waterflows across the landscape

At the same time turnpikes can also work as dikes helping to control and direct water in situations with extreme rain and even be seen as a way to prepare local places for climate change

Drawing is part of hiking.org research of ways to design, build and maintain hiking trails
